Greetings ~

December 29, 1876 was a dark and snowy evening. A blizzard had moved into the Ohio valley area and moving around was a real chore. Travel by rail was a hazard and many trains were grounded at railroad depots and yards all over the northeast. But one train was moving. It needed two locomotives to get it through the large snow drifts but it was moving. Passing through the Ohio area, this train began to cross the Ashtabula, Ohio railroad bridge over the Ashtabula river. However, it would not make it and would plunge down into the water. Many on board would burn to death in the fire of the wreak, drown in the river or would be killed instantly by the fall or the crushing of their passenger cars by others landing on top of them. After the tally was taken, the estimate was 97 dead and over 60 severely injured. This blog is the story of that accident and how it happened and what happened afterward. This blog is dedicated to not only the victims of this terrible event, but to the citizens of Ashtabula and others who ran to the scene to help however they could.
